Show Results with Your New Digital Camera

Tip #11 Show results with before and after photos, numbers, progress reports, charts and graphs. It is not sucking up to make what you do more visual, interesting and easier for your boss to understand.

That tip is from my cartoon booklet, "Rodney's 52 Ways to Impress Your Boss--Without Sucking Up!" With the prices of digital cameras coming down, and the quality of digital cameras going up, I thought Christmas would be a good time to remind you that your new digital camera can help you career.

Certainly you can take before and after photos of a clean-up or improvement project. Here are some more things you can do with a digital camera that will help your company--and your career:

  • Take photos of people you want to publicly praise and post them on a bulletin board
  • Get shots of problem areas and ask the boss if he will let you fix them
  • Grab shots to put in a Power Point sales or training presentation
  • Take pictures for a news release
  • Grad photographs of best practices at other companies you visit
  • (Of course, you might also make a few bucks by selling unwanted Christmas presents on Ebay, but that's a different story.)

So, grab your camera, or buy one at an after Christmas sale, get the shots of your spouse and your children, your tree in garland and your dog in an elf custome, but remember that a digital camera can also put money in your pocket. For good deals on camera visit Wolf Camera, Wal Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City.

Enjoy-Your-Work-More Day

52_ways_to_enjoy_work To enjoy work more, set aside one day per week, maybe Fridays, and spend the whole day thinking of ways to make work more fun. As you go about your usual business, think of things you can celebrate about your job. Look for people you can praise. Dream of new people you could meet at work, new things you could do at work, new ways you can help other people at work. Do things you know will make you happier, like listening to your MP3 player while you do routine cleaning, sorting or paperwork. On your weekly Enjoy-Your-Work-More Day, go ahead and buy someone a soda, say thank you to someone, forgive someone for something they did earlier in the week, donate some money. Think of all the nice things you could do with your Sweetie when you get home. On the way home, by your sweetie some flowers or a candy bar. To have more joy at work, put a little joyful effort into it. Imagine what your year would be like if you did this once a week for 52 weeks!

Want more suggestions on how to have more and more great days at work? Buy my new tip booklet, "Rodney's 52 Ways to Impress Your Boss--Without Sucking Up!" It's full of wonderful tips, quotes, cartoons, questions and two checklists that will help you earn a raise or ace that job interview. Even the smallest raise would more than pay for the cost of this fun booklet, and a new job could pay for the booklet with enough money left over to buy a new car. Most orders ship within 24 hours. Click the "Buy Now" button below for safe and secure ordering. Isn't a raise or a new career worth more to you than the price of one cup of coffee and a bran muffin? Order now.

Tip #42 Keep Your Office or Work Area Clean

Keeping your desk, office, table or work area clean is a very clever way of impressing the boss. Why? Because it makes your job easier, while giving the impression that you are clear headed. "Hey, I ain't no freaking maid!" Oh, okay, but is your job any more important than a brain surgeon or a fighter pilot? I'll bet the guy cracking open heads at your local hospital is a stickler for having all his tools exactly where he wants them. If the local police officer is expected to clean out his squad car after his shift, I have a pretty good feeling I won't find old candy wrappers on the floor of an AV-8B Harrier Jump Jet.

I don't care who you are, at the end of your shift, you need to clean off your desk, sweep up your area, put your tools back and generally clean up. You don't need 17 pens and 2 secret paper stashes in your desk. You don't need to spend 45 minutes looking for tools because you left them ... uh, somewhere! if you don't want to do it to look good, do it because having what you need when you need it gives you more time to enjoy your friends at work. Do it so you won't dread going into work and staring at that awful mess. Do it to impress the boos, or for your own peace of mind, but get started on it today.

Zombie Cartoon

Zombie_with_captionTip # 39 Be Willing to "clean up nice" for special occasions. It's not selling out of sucking up to dress well for a big client, an awards banquet or the fund raising ball. Don't let your ten thousand dollar promotion go to someone else because you refused to wear anything but ripped jeans.

52 Ways to Impress Your Boss Tip 38: Be Yourself, You are Probably Good at It

If you want to impress your boss, without sucking up, be yourself. Yes, in a sense you are risking embarrassment, maybe even setting yourself up for a bit of teasing, but showing your true face is has several powerful advantages.

Confidence

When you show your true face, people begin to know you. This give them confidence in you, and makes them feel safe. It also help you attract other people authentic people into your life. They won’t all be just like you, but they will be people who appreciate honesty and appreciate the qualities that make you special. Isn’t that the type of people you want around you? Your boss will have confidence in you too. He’ll see that the face you present to him is the same face you show to your coworkers and family. He’ll see that you attract and surround yourself with people who have guts. That’s impressive.

Wisdom

Being who you are shows wisdom too. It shows you are wise enough to have a little perspective: “So, some people don’t like me. I can live with that.” Strangely enough, in my experience, most bosses like it that you are willing to show you don’t desperately need their approval. If all your boss sees is your I’m-a-pleasing-puppy face, well, they just won’t ever let you play with the big dogs.

Joy and Ease

The secret, unexpected benefit, of being yourself, is the feeling of joy and ease you experience. When you take a little time to learn who you are, what you like and don’t like, what you believe and what you are willing to stand up and fight for, life suddenly gets easier. You’ve only got two hands to work with, and if you are using one hand to hold up a mask, it cuts the amount of work you can do almost in half. If you are worried about what others think, it limits your creativity. If you are always second guessing, plotting and over thinking you don’t have extra energy to give your family and friends when they need help. You don’t notice when you have a good idea, or when you need to keep your mouth shut, and pretty soon, you’re in trouble again!

So, no need to suck up to get ahead. Just relax and be yourself. Try it for five minutes a day, and I believe you’ll be very surprised at the results.
